62 Year 10 students from all over Gloucestershire took over our Oxstalls Campus last week to start their 5 day Summer School!
Unlike the Year 12 residential, year 10’s get to have a taste of lots of different subject areas at our three campuses and have an extra night on campus to enjoy!
First day is icebreaker day, getting to know each other and the campus as a whole. Each flat group is mentored by one of our Student Ambassadors for the week, so this was the perfect time to get to know them and find out about university for the first time.
The afternoon was home to the fresher’s fair, where students could sign up to join societies and sports clubs! Which lead into our evening quiz and movie or sports night for all.
Our first subject day was at Park campus in Cheltenham, offering media and computing taster sessions. Everyone had a choice of two subjects in the morning then attended Law and TV production after lunch.
Our law session is always a favourite as students were re-enacting an old court case for the first time!
After a busy day, everybody head to the local swimming pool to have some relaxation time with friends, catching up on the day and chatting about the sessions they’ve had.
Wednesday is always sports and societies day at University and this theme ran into the subject sessions for the day. Everything from Events Management to Sport Coaching to Drama was on offer amongst others in a jam packed day of activities.
We had a visitor to our summer school with aboriginal drums and instruments before going bowling on the Wednesday night. Everyone really enjoyed the session, jamming with each other freestyle whilst also making some funky tunes.
The mid way point of the week was passed after some bowling and food in the evening.
Thursday was FCH day. Francis Close Hall is just outside Cheltenham and is called Hogwarts by most of our students studying there. We had another busy day of subject sessions including Education studies, youth studies and fashion design with the headline talk coming from the Psychology department in the lecture theatre.
We returned to Oxstalls, heavy with anticipation for the last night PARTY!!!
A tradition of ours is to hand out Summer School awards to start the night before tucking into plenty of snacks and drinks.
The university housed a DJ and fancy dress for the night to end our summer school in style! Everybody had a great time, dancing and boogying down to their favourite songs with their new friends!
Friday was the last day, with lots of tired bodies after the party. There were a few light sessions in the morning after breakfast before delivering their group presentations to all the parents to showcase what we had been up to all week.
There was laughter and tears (from the ambassadors!) as many of the students reflected on what had been a fantastic week.
Good Luck to everybody who spent the week here at the University of Gloucestershire! We hope all of you go on to successful things and keep in touch with those new friends you’ve made during your stay here!
